Discovery Program

This is the core service for Autism Action and sets the foundations for learning.  It is specifically designed to meet the needs of any child on the Autism Spectrum. Autism Action prides itself on providing a holistic teaching approach by including all family members, others carers and services providers within the program. This service is tailored to the individual needs of the diagnosed child and their family. Your personal Family Education Therapist will provide you with educational and emotional support. Along the way you will gain a better understanding of autism and develop the specific skills needed to further develop your child’s potential. These include the strategies and resources needed to develop your child’s communication, play, daily living, socialization and behavior management skills.  Your Family Education Therapist combines, speech, occupational therapy, behavior management and  education with in each session to help develop your child's skills. Strategies are “customized” to suit the varying dynamics of your family and your child's ongoing individual needs. Your Family Education Therapist will use a variety of teaching approaches and strategies which may include:
*    Music therapy.
*    PECS.
*    Behavior Modification.
*    Floortime.
*    Pivotal Response Training.
*    Sensory Integration.
*    Hanen.
*    Direct teaching

Regardless of the strategy or approach,  your Family Education Therapist will model and support you through each stage of your child’s development.
Your Family Education Therapist will also integrate and liaison with other specialized programs or professionals your child currently uses. These may include Early Intervention, Speech or Occupational Therapist.  We can also work closely with Kindergartens and Schools.  Professionals can access support through our Educational Consultancy Service.

This Program is great if your child and family have a broad need of early intervention as the Family Education Therapist combines Communication/Speech development, Behavior modification, self help skills, gross/fine motor development, sensory and play development and social skills.  Addition to this, we support the mother, father, siblings and grandparents throughout the program, as we believe Autism Spectrum Disorder is a family diagnoses so you too, need support. **

Sessions now available at the Autism Action Learning Centre.

Next Step Program

Foundations for Learning (suitable for pre-school children)

The Next Step program provides a cost effective intensive therapy to your child using a variety of evidence based practices that are best suited to your child's learning ability. After 3-6 months of the 'one-to-one' home-based Discovery Program, some children are ready for an intensive independent developmental program. The Next Step Program is a developmental learning program where a Special Education Teacher writes an individualized therapy program which can be followed through independently by parents or by a trained autism therapist. The Next Step Program follows the same format as you would find in any Early Intervention Program, Special School, Special Developmental School and main stream school where an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is required under Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD). In the program, the child's learning goals may focus on one or all of the following developmental areas: play, communication (verbal and non verbal acquisition skills), academic skills, social skills, independent living skills, gross/fine motor skills, behavior modification and sensory integration.

A Special Education Teacher, and autism therapist either work one on one or with small peer groups of children. Your child’s individually written program will teach play, communication, social and academic skills through repetition and motivating activities.  Your child’s program will be tailored to meet your family and child’s individual needs.

Sessions activities appear to look  like "normal play" as each learning goal activity engages your child to develop skills that a neuro-typical child acquires so easily.   Therapy combines one on one skills at the table (direct teaching), playing games (social play skills, numeracy and language acquisition), arts and crafts (fine motor skills, sequencing skills, language acquisition, numeracy skills), cooking (independent living skills, numeracy, language acquisition) sports (gross motor, social play skills, sequencing skills, language acquisition, numeracy skills).  This makes it great fun for all participants and without realizing it the child is learning goals set in his/her program but above all your child can assimilate skills more easily with siblings, family friends, peers at kinder and school!
